The Z8 coordinates a central HVAC unit serving multiple zones. Pelican zone thermostats send demand information over the wireless mesh network, and the Z8 adjusts the central equipment. It supports up to eight zone-thermostat demands; a bypass damper does not count as a zone.

Control and sensing

The controller provides binary and modulating outputs, temperature inputs and differential-pressure sensing. Pelican documents sequences for coordinating heating, cooling, ventilation and supply-duct static pressure. The applicable sequence depends on the air-handling equipment, dampers, fan control and installed sensors.

System requirements

A Pelican Gateway and Internet connection are needed for configuration and remote management. The installation manual states that configured devices retain local operation if Internet access is lost. Individual zones need the appropriate Pelican thermostats and damper/reheat interfaces; the Z8 is not a replacement for a network gateway.

Installation considerations

The Z8 uses a 24 V AC supply. Its central-equipment outputs, temperature inputs and pressure connections must be matched to the installation using the zone coordinator and damper-control manuals. Use the zoning sequence guide when assessing the complete system; a generic thermostat compatibility label is insufficient.

Technical document notes

Pelican’s linked documents disagree on supply current, relay current and enclosure depth. These ratings are omitted from the specification table pending confirmation of the applicable Z8 hardware revision. Review the installation guide and manufacturer confirmation before sizing the supply, selecting switched loads or planning enclosure clearances.
